Why Yoga Works

The information here comes from a recent workshop I attended with Sue Jones, sponsored by The Breathing Room yoga studio in South Portland, Maine.  This is an excerpt of a letter I wrote to a friend who I thought might benefit from regular yoga practice.


Breathing and movement combine to help build important pathways that may not have formed in some individuals. Early childhood experiences or trauma at any time of life can interrupt the immune, emotional, nervous and hormonal systems from behaving the way they should. All 4 systems that are impacted at once when illness, trauma and fear are present. Nothing happens in one system that does not affect the other 3. 
Memories are suppressed or destroyed  by chronic levels of cortisol over time. Few recollections of childhood and difficulty learning are two possible effects of overproduction of cortisol as an overabundance of stress hormones and glutamate physically damage the hippocampus area of the brain. When the amygdala part of thebra…

Heart and Path (from the Book of Awakening

This excerpt speaks to me today and as we move toward spring.

It takes six million grains of pollen to seed one peony, and salmon need a lifetime of swimming to find their way home...Everything in nature is given some form of resilience by which it can rehearse finding its way, so that, when it does, it is practiced and ready to seize its moment. This includes us.

As the many grains of pollen birth the one flower & the many eggs spawned birth the one fish, each person we love &  each dream we dream we try to give life to brings us closer to the mystery of being alive. So we must try as many times as necessary until our many loves become one love, until our dreams become the one dream, until heart & path feel the same

21 Day Meditation Blog: Day 1 Om Bhavam Namah

I'm doing Oprah & Deepak's 21 day meditation. I figured I'd give it a try. At first I was thinking I'm not so much an Oprah follower, but that's sort of irrelevant. When I heard her voice and thought about how much power she has in such a mainstream audience, I got it! How great that she and Deepak team up to bring meditation, new learning, a potentially mind opening and altering experience to anyone who wants to participate. This is good work!

Today I commit to perfect health. What does that mean to you? For me, it's much more than physical though the body's health can have a huge impact on how the mind and spirit feel.  If you're into knowing more about that, I'd recommend Carolyn Myss, especially Anatomy of the Spirit.

Daylight Savings Time Yoga on Sunday!

Inhale, breathe in daylight, exhale, the end of winter!

This Sunday I will lead a heated flow class at 4 pm! We'll be celebrating more afternoon daylight and with any weather luck, we'll walk out refreshed with more than an hour of daylight left to enjoy!
